- Family: Megachilidae
- Approximate # species in region: 3
- Common name: scissor bees
Chelostoma are small, strangely elongate megachilids the most beewatchers probably won’t encounter without specifically looking for them. All three of the species in our area (two exotic, one native) have strong associations with particular plants. Chelostoma nest above ground in small cavities.
Chelostoma are slim bees, much more so than Ceratina, Heriades, or female Hoplitis that are similar in size and general appearance. Also notice the large jaws of female Chelostoma, which are more prominent than in Ceratina or Heriades. Male Chelostoma can be rather similar to some Hoplitis males, but lack hooked tips on their antennae.
